Dear Fellow Lions,

First, I would like to thank those Singapore Lions, their spouses and friends for going all the way to Bangkok to attend and support the just completed 91st Lions Clubs International Convention where I was installed as District Governor for fiscal year 2008-2009.

The Installation ceremony signifies the beginning of the great challenge for me and my cabinet officers to administer and to lead our district for the new fiscal year 2008-2009. We pledge that we shall work closely as a team, put in extra efforts and perform our duties to the best of our ability so as to achieve our district and LCI goals and objectives.

LCI Brand Revitalization
Year 2008-2009 will be an exciting Lionistic year for all of us as the Singapore Lions Clubs will be celebrating 50 years of community service (“50Y Celebration”). The occasion is a golden opportunity for us to enhance our Lions image and brand further. Locally, we therefore plan to have more public awareness programs and more well publicised service activities during the official 50Y Celebration period from October to December 2008.

On the global basis Lions Clubs International has already ranked as the best Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) worldwide. Companies rank Lions Clubs International the best NGO with which to work, according to ratings compiled by the UK Financial Times in association with Dalberg Global Development Advisers and the United Nations Global Compact.

For many years, we have let our actions speak for themselves. But in a world defined by the nonstop flow of information, we all need to learn new ways to help others understand who we are and why we matter. The fundamental values of Lions unchanged. But we must express those values in ways that are concise, consistent and compelling. The future of Lions clubs depends on it.

Focus On Membership Growth
Visible community projects attract new members, and involving members in hand-on projects keeps members active, develop their leadership and teamwork skills, and renews their commitment to Lionism. Service activities are always a key factor in the passion of our members. Whether the projects are local or global in scope, Lions are the everyday heroes accomplishing Miracles Through Service all over the world. But while We Serve we must also always remember that we shall do it with Sincerity, Morality, Integrity, Love and Enthusiasm –S.M.I.L.E. It is my strong belief that only when service is done with such commitments and benevolent thoughts then can Miracles be created!

Through the tremendous effort of IPDG Henry Tan, last fiscal year saw a significant increase in membership through recruitment, extension while successfully containing dropping out. The membership blue has bothered us for quite sometime and I truly hope that the momentum of membership growth in the previous year will carry over to the current and future years. A big thank you to our IPDG Henry Tan.

Support For District Projects
The District Administration will actively mobilise clubs and Lions members to support District projects like the Lions Home and the Lions Befrienders Service Association by raising the necessary funds to run the organizations. The District Administration will also assist in the promotion and development of the Lions Community Service Foundation which ultimately should be the financial arm of our District projects. While raising funds, clubs and members should always remind themselves to uphold the corporate governance especially on the fund raising procedures of our district organizations.

Charter Obligation and Administration
Finally, in order for our Lions movement to continue to succeed, clubs must always strive to have strong fundamentals before ever thinking of embarking on more challenging service and fundraising projects and activities. Clubs must strive to have sound club administration including prompt submission of monthly membership and activity reports, compliance with local regulatory requirements, etc, and fulfilling their charter obligation pertaining to the finance and programs of clubs, district and Lions Clubs International.
