The Singapore Chapter (Chapter 12) of the Lions Club International Stamp Club was inaugurated on 21st August 2007. Its Objectives are:
To strengthen Lionism through a common interest in stamp collecting, To foster and develop the avocation of stamp collecting among Lions and their families, and to strengthen International Lionism through international goodwill. To raise funds through the sale of stamps for District 308-A1 programmes including the Lions Home and Lions Befrienders.
Membership: Membership is open to all Lions in MD308A1. Leos will be Associate members. As at the end of February 2009, membership of LISC Chapter 12 stood at 23.
Activities: Lions in Singapore will be proud to know that, for the first time ever, we have our very own stamp that can be used for local postage. Printed by the Singapore Post under “MyStamp” private issues, it is now available in sheets of ten stamps known as ‘miniature sheets’. It consists of two portions – one side shows the Lions logo and the words “Lions Clubs Singapore”, and the other side is the local postage stamp for use within Singapore.
The Singapore Lions ‘miniature sheet’ was an initiative of PDG Anthony Cheong, adviser to the Lions International Stamp Club Chapter 12.. Through his efforts, PDG Anthony Cheong obtained Lions International Stamp Club’s (LISC) approval to use the Lions logo on the stamp, and then had the ‘miniature sheets’ printed at the Singapore Philatelic Museum. It is hoped that this first issue of the Singapore stamp depicting our Lions logo will contribute to our efforts to create awareness of Lionism in Singapore, as well as to spread the good name of Singapore throughout the world.’
Although the first issue stamp is only for local usage, the miniature sheet would be very popular among stamp collectors around the world. Already, numerous orders for this first sheet has been received, and it has been published in “The Philatelist”, LISC’s newsletter that is circulated internationally.’
To be sold at the attractive price of US$12.50 or S$20.00 per sheet, the Singapore Chapter of LISC will be donating all nett proceeds from the sale of the miniature sheets to the Lions Home for the Elders, Lions Befrienders Service Association, and the Lions Community Service Foundation.
In addition, Chapter 12 created a commemorative First Day Cover this year to mark the 50th anniversary of Lionism in Singapore. This attractively designed FDC, priced at S$20 for a set of 5 covers, was a hit at the recent Lions Convention in Bangkok, as it makes for a wonderful gift at Lions meetings.
